Thank you. Cumberbatch did a great job in the role, but it wasn’t his role. How much more powerful would that performance been with a South Asian actor who could pull on a lifetime of microaggressions and colonialism? In today’s political climate, where every brown person is immediately a terrorist? To have a movie where we see the motivation behind someone’s actions, where we as an audience empathize with the villain? Abrams’ failure to cast an actor of color says that he doesn’t think an audience can empathize with a brown person, and that’s fucked up.
